Crickle

Crickle is about capturing the sweeping gesture of writing. It’s based on experimental handwriting with a visible left slant, producing uninterrupted lines between letters in a strong zigzag. The digital version is made with a roughened outline maintaining the energetic, dynamic look of the writing tool and the characteristic textured style of handwriting. The many glyph alternates contribute to Crickle’s lively look by emulating hasty scribbles. The scribble out feature is a fun extra which allows you cover up your mistakes.

To give users, illustrators and cartoonists maximum flexibility, Crickle comes with an additional experimental font: Crickle SPINE, a contour-only version to which you can add structures or lines. If you purchase any Crickle weight you get Crickle SPINE for free!

Once installed, simply type your text, convert it to paths and then apply any brushstroke or (calligraphic) line. You can use Illustrator’s brushes or compatible online alternatives. If you use Adobe CC you can even create your own style brushes with Adobe Capture! Please note: Crickle SPINE is an experimental font and may or may not work depending on the app and your OS. It does work in Illustrator 2022 on MacOS 12.

The name Crickle derives from the German word “Krickelkrackel” which means scribble or scrawl.
